October 10, 2013 (Raleigh, NC) – On Wednesday, November 6, North Carolina Modernist Houses (NCMH) and series sponsor Sarah Sonke of MODTriangle will present “The Oyler House: Richard Neutra’s Desert Retreat” at 7:30 p.m. at The Raleigh Grande Cinema in Raleigh. Director Mike Dorsey of Los Angeles will Introduce the film and take questions afterwards.

In an interview earlier this year, Dorsey said, “The Oyler House is about the relationship between an architect and his client. In 1959, my step-grandfather, who was a working-class government employee in the tiny desert town of Lone Pine, California…asked world-famous modern architect Richard Neutra to design his modest family home. To his surprise, Neutra agreed. Thus began an unlikely friendship that would last for the rest of Neutra’s life.”

English designer and blogger Mark Robinson, who conducted the interview with Dorsey, wrote, “I’ve been lucky enough to watch the full film, and to any architecture or design fan you’ll definitely fall in love with the house, the setting, and the general storyline. It’s very heartwarming to hear how the place was built from scratch and to see the old archive films of it being used and lived in for its intended purpose. You won’t be disappointed!”

Oyler1The documentary features interviews with Richard F. Oyler, the original owner of the house; Neutra’s sons Raymond and Dion; and the house’s current owner, actress Kelly Lynch. Through these interviews, the film provides insight into Neutra’s remarkably visionary mind.

Tickets to “The Oyler House” are $9 and are available at the NCMH ticket desk inside the Raleigh Grande at 4840 Grove Barton Road, Raleigh, NC 27613 (919.226.2012).
